SUMO #14  GREEN

With people moving out of cities or just spending more time indoors, we seem to have found our connection with nature again: home gardening has never been so popular. It would be easy to consider this but a trivial pastime of a locked humanity, but the phenomenon is much bigger than apartment plants (which are pretty big on their own).

Cities are trying to reclaim their contact with nature, too, either by public initiative, with rooftop vegetable gardens, or by public policy, redesigning urban spaces to offer an easy access to green areas.

Personally, we love plants. Having them next to us or showing through our window can sooth our sometimes overstressed minds. But this trend could have far-ranging implications: cities tend to distance us from nature, to the point we perceive it as something separate from us. By acknowledging our “need for green” we could become more aware of nature and of our role in it.

Now, go plant something.
