MAY I (P)INTEREST YOU IN A PODCAST?

Noël breaks down the making of Pinterest Sans on The Follow-up, in conversation with Simon Blockley and James Hurst of Pinterest, and Alistair Webb of Made Thought. You’ll have to subscribe to listen to the episode, but you can also check out Pinterest’s case studyand our own commission studyonline.

“We like to imagine a typeface like a person—it has its own unique personality. The personal aspects of Pinterest Sans needed to be approachable, simple, personal, and modern, so we had to ask: How can we infuse all of this personality within a very simple and modern look to make the typeface not bland or boring or too much like something that already exists? Building a geometric sans serif typeface has this tipping point—if you make it too geometric, it will look too static or bleak, and not warm enough. And if you make it too funky and dynamic, it won’t look serious enough. So you have to find the sweet spot between the two, and you can only do that by really getting into the details. It requires taking very emotional and complex feelings that the client wants and translating that into a bunch of sequential, two-dimensional sculptures.” — Noël Leu

We can’t wait to kick off a new year with you! We’ve got lots more to come.
Stay tuned, and stay warm in the mean time.
