It’s in trusted bonds that the most profound work is done

New class from IDEO U.

To make a difference in the world, we need to involve others along the way. We can’t do it alone.

In Western culture, we tend to value individuals—soloists—with all eyes focused on the hero. A much better way to look at the world is by seeing that every team is an ensemble. It’s through the connection and combination of people's talents that the best work is done.

All acts of greatness are the work of an ensemble. If you focus on relationships, not only do you improve yourself by bringing your best, but you improve the performance of your team by creating the conditions for a true diversity of thought, background, and talent to come together. The foundation of teams is based on the strength of the duos within them. If you show up to a team with someone you trust, who will support you, you walk in with a base sense of confidence and safety. It’s in trusted bonds that the most profound, rewarding, and important work is done.

But it starts with You. Think about your superpower—that unique gift you have that no one else has. When you're really using that superpower, it causes a kind of internal confidence. Which in turn sparks generosity—a willingness to freely give from that superpower to others. And when you do, that's when you can create something extraordinary, alongside other people—together.

Our team at SYPartners has collaborated with IDEO U to bring you From Superpowers to Great Teams, an online class to help you show up as your best self at work, and then build the relationships and conditions for people around you to thrive. In this class, you’ll identify your unique strengths—superpowers—and gain awareness of their shadow sides; learn to strengthen your one-to-one work relationships—duos; and cultivate great teams by designing the conditions that make your team feel supported, appreciated, and connected.

My greatest advice for you is to focus on your relationships. Let go of your ego and self. Let go of the dysfunction of your team. Focus only on trust—and great work will naturally follow.

Sincerely,

Keith Yamashita
