Media Elites Tell All!

Big tech, feckless owners, cord-cutters, restive staff, smaller audiences … and the return of print?

On the news-media business:

It is a great time to be in the excellent-journalism business, and it’s a shitty time to be in the mediocre-journalism business.

Journalism with a capital J is no good to anyone if nobody’s reading it.

On subscriptions:

If you don’t have a system whereby you have consumers paying for your content, then you are generally in a perilous state.

I’m surprised that people are okay with the subscription model, where they don’t have that many listeners or viewers but are making money, so they’re just good with it. The Substack writers, people with Patreon podcasts. My generation was wired completely differently. We wanted to be read or listened to by as many people as possible. And now this new generation is like, I’m totally cool with having 9,000 die-hard fans.

On where insiders get their gossip fix:

Well, I get a lot of my gossip from Ben Shapiro.

On newsletters:

I think the most moronic thing I’ve ever heard, in terms of conventional wisdom in media, was that we reached peak newsletters.

On its (lack of) diversity:

No one cares about diversity. No one’s going to be like, Oh my God, another white guy getting the job. I think we took two steps forward, one step back.

On young staffers:

They are not nearly as talented as the people ten and 15 and 20 years ago.

I think you’d have to be crazy to begin a career in journalism right now.
