Clean water is a human right

There’s a quote by African American minister and human rights activist Malcolm X that goes “When ‘I’ is replaced with ‘we’, even illness becomes wellness”. I’ve always believed that our health is intrinsically connected to the health of the planet and of each other, which is why we’ve always made it our mission to give back.

It all started in our first year, when we were a tiny start-up getting off the ground. We decided that, instead of throwing ourselves a holiday party, we’d donate the budget to Coalition For The Homeless and cater the meal as a team instead, and while the budget and donation weren’t huge, it felt right.

Since then, we’ve launched various campaigns to support charities such as BLM, GLAAD, The Jed Foundation, WIRES and The Red Cross while also making direct donations of care packages to healthcare workers, members of the black community and cash donations to our neighbouring local restaurant Ernestos, who was seriously hit financially when COVID first broke out.

Eventually, I knew that in time we’d commit to one partner long-term to help drive meaningful change. At The Nue Co., our mission is to make the world a healthier place, and we realise that mission because of the resilience of nature, the sophistication of science and the determined human spirit. We believe in the healing and life-changing powers of nature, which is why our supplements always utilise natural ingredients.

Selecting a long-term partner wasn’t an easy decision to make. There are so many worthwhile causes that I’m passionate about but we landed on charity: water because water is the ultimate force of nature; when a community gets access to clean water, it can change lives.

Yet today, 785 million people in the world live without clean water—that’s double the population of the United States. The World Health Organization reports that some 829,000 people are estimated to die each year from diarrhoea as a result of unsafe drinking-water, sanitation, and hand hygiene, while transmission of cholera, diarrhoea, dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid and polio is linked to contaminated water and poor sanitation. Access to clean water and basic sanitation can save 16,000 lives every week. Clean water is a human right.

As of today, 1% of our online revenue will go towards funding five water projects by 2021 for communities in developing countries. These projects will improve health, increase access to food, grow local economies, and help children spend more time in school. Transparency and empowerment are two key values for us at The Nue Co., and charity: water reflects these in their clear communications around how donations directly impact those who receive them, and their emphasis on sustainable, community-owned projects that keep water flowing for years to come.

We will continue to share progress with you on our water projects so that you too can understand just how life-changing your contributions really are. I’m so thankful for everyone that has allowed us to get to this stage.
