Once upon a time — specifically, last September — we decided to explore the idea of a line of puzzles for smaller hands and curious minds. Maybe it was all the months we’d spent indoors, but the time felt right to create a collection that was more silly than our usual fare. And ideally at a size that didn’t necessitate a full coffee table takeover for days on end. We started a saga that involved homemade dioramas, miniature astronauts, and more than one visit to the craft store. |
This collage of a family of sea creatures was constructed in our cofounder Rachel’s basement using a pair of very, very tiny scissors. Despite great interference by a cat named Zippy, the collage was completed in time — the night before the photoshoot. Rachel’s sister Sam constructed each planet by hand — including the fiery gold-foiled points of the sun and a glittering ring of Saturn that just did not want to photograph straight — and strung them using fishing wire inside a velvet-and-sequin-lined box. Standard home ec project, people. So, what do you do when you have a perfectly constructed dino diorama, inclusive of an in medias res erupting volcano, a beautiful, Joshua-tree-esque collaged background, and prehistoric animals? Add a disco ball. Naturally. |
