How to make your stories look better.

RTRO - Tip #6

Hi, Julia here. I’m one of the designers on the team who makes A LOT of IG stories at Moment. Vibey video is a great base to make a more interesting story. Here are some of my tips to keep your stories fresh.

Vary the Content

When shooting with your phone, you aren’t seeing what’s around you from just one angle. So why should your followers?

  • Shoot different perspectives of one scene to keep things feeling fresh.
  • Think about showing both wide and tight shots as you tell a story.
  • Mix photos, videos, & boomerangs, with an occasional time-lapse using Hyperlapse.
  • Variety in content will keep viewers tapping instead of swiping away.

Try a Fresh Layout

Don’t post only full-screen photos/videos. Variety in the layout can make your story feel more like flipping through a magazine:

  • Pinch to shrink your photo/video and center or pin to one side. This adds negative space (great for some text).
  • Insta hack — if you copy photos from your camera roll, you can paste and layer them inside Instagram and change the background color too.
  • Use an app like Unfold or Template to get interesting frames and textures (like film rolls!). These apps require zero design skills and give you a 🤯💯🤩 story.

Keep it Consistent

When using text on your stories, don’t be tempted to use every font and color that’s available to you. Stick to one, maybe two, fonts and similar colors to make your Story easy to follow.

You can even start to own a style that becomes easily recognizable to your followers.

Make an Appearance

While watching Stories, you can sometimes forget whose story you’re on. Remember to capture yourself in the scene and it doesn’t have to be your talking face. Need some ideas?

  • Shoot in selfie mode while you look for cereal at the grocery store.
  • Show your hands making a meal or delivering flowers.
  • Capture your feet as you run on the beach with your dog.
  • Seeing bits of you brings viewers into your world. A wide lens really helps with this one.

Un-polished Is In

Whenever I post a raw, unpolished story I usually get more engagement than a well-designed, polished one. Your Instagram feed is probably picture-perfect these days, so let your guard down in your Story. Sometimes raw stories posted in real time are far more exciting — they let your followers come along for the ride!
