The Last Black Man in San Francisco

Change” is the word on everyone’s lips this year, with January’s Sundance Film Festival seeing the highly acclaimed film “The Last Black Man in San Francisco” win awards for Best Directing and the Special Jury Award for Best Creative Collaboration.

Curate have been working with director Joe Talbot since June as well as working with Parisian illustrator Mattis Dovier, working on the production team’s website and teasing his next feature movie. Produced by Brad Pitt and led by pioneering actor Jimmie Fails, this semi-autobiographical film has been a really engaging and fun project - check out the trailer and await the UK release in the near future.

5 months on and the.update has flourished. Bringing together a community of small businesses, founders, and creatives we have facilitated open and honest communication about the highs, the lows, the successes and the ever illusive failures. Transparency in business is key, and learning what the local community needs gives a much needed insight into what we can do, as a community, to make working life just that little bit easier. There’s still time to join us for our August roundtable at The Projects.

We’ve had some great website launches this past quarter, working with Amelia Scott, a consultant based in Connecticut specialising in strategic content who focuses on empowering women in business. We also worked with Shoot To Kill studios, a creative brand content studio based in Brighton, and Liberty Process, a music PR company who champion a focused and detailed approach to achieve real results for musicians. All in all, it's been a productive few months.

It’s that time of year again! We’ve hit the 8 month hump and it’s back to work on the Annual Digest 2020. We’ve got some exciting plans in the works, collecting and documenting the work of entrepreneurs, creatives, and those making a difference. Keep your eyes peeled for what’s to come, and get in touch if you’ve got a bright idea, or just want to find out more.

In other news, we are sponsoring a debut publication produced by Elsa, a new member of the curate team. META META collective is a magazine exhibiting art, science, and politics through progressive thought and intersectionality, launching on the 14th of September at Magazine Brighton in collaboration with Platform B Radio who are doing a pop-up broadcast 11-6pm. Check out the Instagram page or get in touch via email.

What to Hear 🎧
If you haven’t already, check out the Power Hour podcast, 60 minutes of inspiration intended for the early hours before work. We find it is a good cooking accompaniment, no need for the early morning!

What to Watch 🍿

It goes without saying; the government is watching you… So why not watch them watch you? (And no, we don’t mean gogglebox), we mean the recent documentary “The Great Hack”, found on Netflix. It exposes the Cambridge Analytica scandal in gruelling detail, documenting political upheaval, dubious ethical quandaries, and the haunting fact that they just know.

What to Do ☀️

To remedy this foreboding sense of doom, perhaps pop into Somerset House’s exhibition “Get Up, Stand Up Now!”, a major exhibition showcasing the past 50 years of Black creativity in Britain. Curated expertly by Zak Ové, it’s not one to be missed. Act fast and grab a National Art Pass for half-price entry and access to a network of galleries and creative spaces for reduced or free entry.

Thanks for reading our newsletter. Until next time...
