+ Listen to poems from Issue No. 2 of the magazine and the next installation of our collab with 1504.

In 2018, we published stories that explored boiled peanuts and Natty Light, introduced readers to places like Tangier Island and Ollie's Trolley, and pushed us beyond what we had done before.

We're elated to offer you 15 of our best stories of that year in print form so you can enjoy them for the first or the 100th time — wherever you are.

A few months ago, Tyler Jones of the Birmingham-based narrative studio 1504 wrote to us about an immersive exhibit that would bring today's education stories to life. In partnership with the Birmingham Education Foundation and Ramsay High School, Jones and his team created a four-day exhibit in June 2021 that offered a glimpse into the complexities of community engagement, the lives behind the data, and ultimately, why students, teachers, administrators, and parents need our support more than ever.

We're excited to collaborate with 1504 and bring a slice of the exhibit to The Bitter Southerner. During the month of October, we'll be sharing four stories from the exhibit in our Friday emails.

Scroll down to read the third story in the series.

Keion Gilmore began his senior year at Ramsay in August and hopes to study psychology at Tennessee State University. After several years, he no longer rides in his grandfather’s taxi to school.

In 2018, he penned a poem entitled "Look at Me" that was inspired by a friend of his who was being bullied. He says, "She didn’t know it was for her until the end of it, and she said, ‘Is that me?’ I said, ‘Yeah. That’s you.’ She started crying and we just hugged right there. And I told her anything that she was going through was going to be OK. ‘I understand. I’ve been there,’ I said. ‘No matter what, I’m here for you.’ It made me feel good to impact her. Having an impact on others is everything.”
