Starting your pirate journey can be a little daunting, especially with so many new terms, controls and mechanics to master! Fortunately, there are plenty of practised pirates out there ready to give you a helping hand. When you embark on your Maiden Voyage, the Pirate Lord himself will be there to walk you through your first few hours on the Sea of Thieves. And if reading's more your speed, Nine-Cat Nura and Seamark have assembled numerous Pirate Academy articles that help explain aspects of the pirate life. Take a look! |

One of the first things you'll notice is the choice of two game modes: Safer Seas or High Seas. In Safer Seas, you'll have the waters to yourself (and potentially a hand-picked crew). There are still dangers, but you won't need to watch the horizon for other players' ships. Once you're settled in and braced for a skirmish, head on out onto High Seas where player crews from around the world await. Keep in mind, though, that while Safer Seas are less risky, the trade-off is reduced rewards: gold and reputation gained will be capped at 30% of what you could earn on High Seas, so if you're hoping to get rich quick, you'll need to venture into the shared world! |

Pirate ships have a lot of moving parts, but a capable sailor can always set sail alone. If you want to head out on a smaller ship without a crew beside you, go right ahead! |
|
|
Of course, the traditional approach is to crew up with like-minded sailors. Depending on your chosen ship type, you'll be able to sail with up to three crewmates! |

The Sea of Thieves is whatever you make it. Whether you're just dropping by or heading out on an extended expedition, there's something for every pirate to enjoy. Only have time for a quick session? Pick a Voyage and use your Quest Table to dive right into it! Itching for a fight? Spin that Hourglass of Fate to go head-to-head with competitive crews! The sea is your oyster. |
