Why We Celebrate DNA Day, Introducing Basis Reviews, and More

Welcome to the 10th edition of the Elysium Health monthly newsletter.
This month: Celebrate the discovery of the structure of DNA, customers review Basis, and an interview with biologist Vera Gorbunova on aging and molecular strategies for longevity.

Science is social. Follow us for our latest news, original art, and the best science writing.

Study: Boston Researchers Reverse Aging in Mice
Harvard and MIT researchers say they have reversed aging in mice, and that discovery could have health implications for humans. That's according to study published last month in the journal Cell, co-authored by Elysium Chief Scientist and MIT biologist, Dr. Leonard Guarente. "We're talking about being able to stay healthy longer, so being able to do what you like to do," said Guarente in an interview with Boston's WCVB Channel 5.

Interview: Scientific Advisory Board Member, Vera Gorbunova

"If you'd ask me how we age, I'd say there is an accumulation of damage. Our repair systems don't keep up. But why?"
Here's an astonishing fact about naked mole rats: The wrinkly rodents are near-immune to cancer. The answer to why that's the case lies in a stunning discovery made by Vera Gorbunova, professor of biology and Elysium scientific advisor. In March, our team met up with Gorbunova at her University of Rochester lab to discuss how pathways of longevity evolved in different long-lived animals, especially naked mole rats, and what her discoveries can teach us about human health.

"Naked mole rats live very long, some upwards of 30 years, but they stay very fit to the end of their lives. There was a paper that just came out recently summarizing many, many years of statistics on naked mole rats. It said that their mortality — their chance of death — doesn't increase as they get older. Which is crazy, because it tells us they don't age." Read the full interview.

Even more science. Three original stories to read on Endpoints:
7 Wearables That Go Beyond Fitness Trackers
From tracking air quality through inhaler use to detecting breast cancer with bra inserts, these devices are case studies in the different applications for wearables as personalized treatment or therapy.
Does Calorie Restriction Improve Human Health?
A paper recently published in Cell Metabolism reported the results of the most comprehensive human study on the effects of calorie restriction (CR). In people eating less for two years, results showed improved markers of health, consistent with some animal models of CR.
Introducing Customer Reviews
We're thrilled to announce the launch of reviews on our website. Our team is already hearing honest feedback from our customers about what they love about their Basis experience. Here are a few examples.
"I read the articles, trust the researchers on the team and progress toward a new more efficient way to keep the body healthy."
"I feel a greater sense of well being and an overall sense of good health."
"Great product. I have been taking it for almost a year and feel fantastic."
If you're interested in adding your own review of Basis or have questions, send us an email at reviews@elysiumhealth.com. As always, we're grateful for your continued support and rely on your feedback for ways to improve.
Send Us Your Science Questions
Last month we asked for your pick for our next story in Endpoints, our science publication. So are we going to explain the science of meditation or dig into what scientists have learned from twin studies? You voted, and the winner is: meditation. We're beginning the research now and we'll share the finished product in a future issue of this newsletter.

The Supplement Doctors Are Taking
Did you know that almost 10 percent of Elysium customers are doctors? Others are scientists, law enforcement officials, artists, and entrepreneurs.
Plans start at $1.32 per day.
