Heading north, the desert gives way to rolling hills ripe with vineyards. Wine lovers have their work cut out for them in Sonoma County, home of over 400 wineries, many of which offer tours and tastings. If your road trip involves a bike rack, you’ll love the perfectly rideable terrain here.

After all that sunbathing and sipping, it’s time to reconnect with nature. And what better place than the humbling California redwoods, where getting lost in the thousand-year-old trees feels more like finding yourself? The quirky beach towns peppering the coastline are the perfect spot to pull over for a night or two.

Now that we’ve reached the Pacific Northwest, it’s time to check off one of its famous landmarks. Haystack Rock has appeared in many movies, from Goonies to Twilight. After you’ve snapped about a thousand photos—it truly is amazing to see in person—you can stroll along the cute shops and cafes.

You’ll find this unique city just a step back from the coast. With a shipwreck that still rests on the beach, barking sea lions lazing under the boardwalks, and a renowned craft beer scene, there’s a lot to love about Oregon’s oldest city.

For one last taste of city life, we’re heading to the home of world-famous coffee and the iconic Space Needle. The iconic Pike Place Market is a must (the curious can head to the nearby Gum Wall). When you’re hungry, sink your teeth into a diverse culinary scene—in fact, you could spend your whole trip eating your way through Seattle.

With lush, moss-covered forests straight out of a fairytale and beautifully rugged beaches, the Olympic Peninsula is the perfect end to our trip. The 101 wraps around its entirety, so you can choose from exploring the Hoh Rain Forest, summiting Mt. Ellinor, or just putting your feet up and enjoying some local oysters.
