Tis The Voting Season

Now that football season is back, it’s easy to forget we’re in the middle of an election!… SAID NO ONE IN THIS COUNTRY.

Americans have been voting for weeks – specifically 80 MILLION of them. To put this in perspective ~130 million people voted in 2016 IN TOTAL. Millennials and Gen Z make up 37% of voters this election, and more than 5 million people ages 18-29 have voted early or absentee.

If you’re here, you value the importance of voting, but we encourage you to make sure your friends have a voting plan as well!

Hey SMILES DAVIS,

Here’s what your Political Playlist leaders have been up to recently:

Haley Stevens

Age 36, Michigan-11, Democrat

A former political organizer and alumna of the Obama White House, Haley won her previously Republican-held seat in 2018. She now serves as the co-president of the House Democratic Freshman class.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce historically almost always endorses GOP politicians… until now. This year, Haley and a handful of other Democrats were endorsed by the business-centered group, much to Republicans’ dismay. The Chamber stated that “Stevens’ leadership… helps workers and manufacturers have full access to export markets and a restored sense of certainty for years to come.” In a somewhat scandalous outcome of these endorsements, one of the Chamber’s top political advisors abruptly resigned due to the group’s ‘leftward shift’. However, a spokeswoman for the Chamber said that he was terminated. Who knew we’d get soap opera-worthy drama from the Chamber of Commerce!

Lizzie Fletcher

Age 44, Texas-7, Democrat

A moderate Democrat and the first woman to represent her district who was also the editor-in-chief of the William & Mary Law Review.

It turns out, members of Congress take note when you contact them! Since taking office in 2019, Lizzie announced that her office has successfully closed 3,000 individual cases pertaining to constituents in her district. Ranging from ensuring small business owners secure PPP loans to rescuing a constituent stuck in Peru after the borders closed due to Covid, Lizzie has proved indefatigable and invaluable to many of her fellow Texans. Get Lizzie a 5-star Yelp review!

Trey Hollingsworth

Age 36, Indiana-9, Republican

A former small business owner who’s manufacturing operations have made him the 12th richest Congressman.

Trey recently secured almost $1 million in federal funds, thanks to the CARES Act, which will be split among three towns in his district and be used to help combat homelessness and alleviate economic hardship exacerbated by the pandemic. In addition to this latest victory, Trey also introduced a bipartisan bill back in March aimed at increasing the housing supply and affordability in suburban communities. Trey is on a mission to “ensure all Hoosiers can afford to put a roof over their head” and for that, we tip our cap.

Josh Hawley

Age 39, Missouri-, Republican

Josh was the head of Yale Law School’s chapter of the conservative Federalist Society and published a biography of Teddy Roosevelt. As of 2020, he’s the youngest member of the U.S. Senate.

Josh introduced a resolution in the US Senate titled “Condemning the Chinese Communist Party’s use of forced labor and other coercive measures to destroy religious freedom in Tibet.” The bill calls upon US companies to divest from firms in China that are involved in imposed labor by the CCP in Tibet. Josh remarked “Beijing is using modern slavery to punish Tibetans for practicing their religious faith. We must hold Beijing accountable and that starts with ending American corporations’ complicity in Chinese forced labor.”

Jared Golden

Age 37, Maine-2, Democrat

A moderate Democrat and veteran who previously worked for Republican Senator, Susan Collins.

Too often in politics, elected leaders get caught up in the ebb and flow of Washington, often at the expense, and frustration, of their local constituents who sent them there in the first place. But Jared never seems to forget where he comes from, having just secured $6.5 million in loans and grants from the USDA for improvements throughout his district. The funds will be used towards various wastewater systems upgrades, as well as expanding telemedicine access, particularly in much needed rural areas. Have you ever thought about how much your representative does for your local community?

With voting underway and long lines reported across the country, some organizations are getting creative with ways to keep voters occupied... and fed!

Check out Joy To The Polls, a Philly-based group that dances for people waiting in line to vote, for some pretty entertaining footage.

And, if you see a long line somewhere, Pizza To The Polls is sending food trucks and other sustenance to areas with long voting lines. America is nothing if not resourceful!
