Enjoy, inspire and learn from the stories of leading modern type designers featured in our fresh editorial Faces Behind Typefaces. The project explores the impact of renowned Type Directors’ Club medalists with first-hand stories from today’s most active members. Among others:
French type designer Jean-Baptiste Levée talks about the role of Californian duo Emigre: “In the 1990s, they were the young punk kids—the cool and fashionable ones. They managed to disrupt the dogmas and reform the typographic trade to make it more open” and explains how they managed to open doors into typography for many specialists.
TDC advisory board member Douglas Davis contemplates the impact of the prolific type designer and master teacher Ed Benguiat on his personal vision and creativity: “He helped reframe who can participate in creative fields and bring a bigger variety of voices into design.”
Argentinian type designer Fer Cozzi highlights the educational mission of her teacher Rubén Fontana: “He was the first who spoke about letters as results of the social context in which they appear. The society in Argentina is very politicized. People are interested in politics and the historical background of the country. So, it’s important for designers to deliver works with a statement.”
