Planting the Seeds of Jewish Values

I designed and developed this brand new email template for PJ Library's New York office. They send out a monthly newsletter to their community with a letter from the Director, community events, and other resources. I don't have data on this email yet since it's being used for the first time next month, but I believe people will be able to read the highlighted events better and serve the community.

The email is fully responsive and even coded up to look good in dark mode. PJ Library's branding shines through in this template, utilizing brand colors and illustrations specially made for NYC. This is also the first template I've developed fully leveraging Mailchimp's templating language, allowing others to create accessible emails. The subject line is a play off of the upcoming holiday Tu B'Shevat, which is the "birthday" for the trees.

How accessible is this email?

Looks aren’t everything. Does this email follow key accessibility best practices? Our friends at Litmus ran the test.

  • Emails should have a "meta content-type" and defined character set.

  • Table roles should be clearly defined. This helps screen readers determine how to interpret the table.

  • Larger paragraphs of text should be left-justified to improve readability for some readers.

  • Without a [lang] attribute, screen readers will assume the email is in the default language the subscriber chose when setting up their screen reader. If your email is not in that user’s language, the screen reader may not accurately transcribe your message.

  • Email headings should be well structured. This will help screen readers easily navigate content.

  • Specifying "alt text" for these images helps screen readers describe the image.

  • Text to voice recording and transcript for hearing impaired.
