With only two months before the festivities begin, we thought we’d make the most of the year by launching our very first memo: a round-up of interesting design news from near and far, with some major studio updates while we’re at it.

Design Census 2019

Created by Google and American Institute of Graphic Arts, the Design Census tracks the invisible social and economic forces shaping today’s design practice.

Though data's drawn only from the United States, it’s a fascinating read for anyone who wants to understand the state of design – or quote nifty facts like “illustrators are the most underpaid but happiest creatives”.

The Greta Font

A sign of our times, Greta Grotesk is a free font based on the teenage activist’s handwriting. The typeface is “perfect if you want to make your message loud and clear in a poster,” says its creator.

Our New Studio

We moved to our new address in Jalan Besar at the start of the year, so it’s high time to show you the nooks and crannies of our brand new studio, designed in-house with lots of love. Yah-Leng x AGI

It’s official: our founding creative director Yah-Leng has become the second person and first female designer from Singapore to be inducted into Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI). Formally introduced in Rotterdam last month, her membership is a huge milestone for

Yah-Leng and Foreign Policy to remain at the forefront of graphic design.

And what exactly is AGI? A gathering of the world’s leading graphic artists and designers, with 527 members from 43 countries and counting. Its members are collectively behind the brand identities of the world’s biggest corporations and institutions, from packaging and publications to illustrations and posters.

It all started in 1951, when two Swiss and three French graphic artists decided to formalise their relationship into an association. The most important AGI events are the annual AGI Congress and AGI Open, held in a different country each year – we can’t wait for Singapore’s turn.
