The other day I asked a friend how many years of his life he would give to his dog, if he had the ability to do so. I’ve thought about this a lot myself, as the entirety of my emotional wellbeing rests on the fact of my own dog's continued existence; my ability to be near him, and to feed him pasta with my mouth. After forgetting the plain nourishment of mother’s milk or formula, there is a somewhat predictable trajectory of taste that evolves through adulthood (no one is born with the capacity to enjoy a Negroni), which then, in old age, contracts to something resembling the limited tastes and textures of youth, minus the food coloring. The trailers for The Matrix: Resurrections and Paul Thomas Anderson’s delightfully named Licorice Pizza came out recently and both do what I thought might never be possible again: they used original versions of popular songs (Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” and Bowie’s “Life On Mars," respectively). A small glimmer of hope in a desolate marketing wasteland. It’s sad that these songs felt like breaths of fresh air.
