Our New Low Yield Newsletter.

Damp is a small team of two, and we’ve been looking for more ways to consistently send an interesting email each month. This month, we’re trying out a new format for our newsletter that will hopefully be enjoyable and insightful for you, and more manageable for us. We’ll still be sending our more robust features like our Low Brow Pairings and Subway Stop Guides but expect more emails like this along the way.

The company that wants to up-cycle your wine bottle

The majority of glass consumed in the US ends up in the trash. Only about 1/3 of glass gets recycled, even though it's 100% recyclable and can be recycled endlessly without losing quality. Meanwhile other European countries, such as Switzerland and Germany, recycle 90% of their glass. Even when glass bottles are recycled and turned into new products, it takes a tremendous amount of energy to do so. Instead of breaking down all of our wine bottles, they could instead be reused.

Good Goods is building a model for reusable consumer products starting with wine bottles, and working to eventually expand beyond wine. They've been partnering with local shops in NYC including Henry's, Natural Wine Co, and Stranger Wines to develop an incentive-based program where you get $2 back for each used bottle you return. Those bottles will eventually end up back in the hands of a winemaker.

Good Goods has found that reusing bottles eliminates the input of raw materials in the supply chain, diverts waste from landfills, and significantly cuts the carbon footprint of wine – in total, it can reduce the carbon footprint by over 50% compared to new and recycled bottles.

This 40% Grolleau, 60% Cabernet Franc is the perfect chillable, shareable, fresh red. Full of tart red fruit, a little pepper, and a lively structure, this wine goes with most things and we drank it way too fast. Coming in at 13% alcohol, it drinks like a lighter bodied wine. Picked up at Vine Wine and currently available at Chambers St. Wines.
