Things are looking brighter and summer is truly upon us – what a lovely time! It’s been sunny on the PP side of things too, with some new releases (we hope you’ve clocked Editorial Sans!!!! If not, we’ll have more on that soon), some upcoming products drops and generally some great energy, gotta be honest. 🪐🦋✨
 
Off Type has also been in full bloom 🌼, with the recent release of OT Bulb, and we thought it was time to have a little retrospective on our sister foundry, specifically, its typeface stories. 📖
 
For those who may not know, with every release of an Off Type typeface comes their own little ‘God’ and their own little story to match. These two elements are combined on the typeface’s web page in the form of a Pokemon card, which you can access by clicking the God! 🐉
 
As the stories are somewhat of an Easter Egg for true PP and OT fans, we thought we’d get the word out there a bit by highlighting some of our favourite stories. The stories themselves – abstract, odd and unusual – are all grounded in the details, concept and construction of their namesake, each conjuring up a small scene from Off Type’s peculiar world. 🌐

🌞 RAYUELA 🌞
It was a tale known throughout the land, a folkloric kindred character of mythic voice, long lost to seasons changed, and centuries ignored. Once they roamed the Patagonian trails, with one hand on heart and one on string, guided by the wit of the wind and the pulls of pints yonder. A clown to some and a pioneer to others, Rayuela found fame in the hearts of youngsters, who saw their soul’s silliest and most serious thoughts within the wayfarers soft verse. Playing games as they wandered from town to town.
 
Although long before the time of public parchment and printing presses, Rayuela’s songs of feelings, flora and fauna enlivened the landscape of Patagonia wide, for season after season, until legend the lyrics became. And then, lost. Remnant only in the prosaic lines of limerick, often skipped. Rayuela is, will be and was, as real as the rough they traversed. A travelling sonet whose anthems still echo true. Their songs heard in abandon. In the innocent play of youth. Heard in the call of the sun’s setting and the wonder in wandering. You just have to listen carefully.
 
There once was the figure Rayuela, 
Who believed they were quite the storyteller.
Hopping along, 
they sang a silly song,
And swiftly became a bestseller.

🌓 NEUE MONTREAL SQUEEZED 🌓
There was always a lot to squeeze in. There was the run Montreal wanted to do, and they wanted to do more of it, as well as popping to the gym. They also needed to see their friends, some more than others. Montreal desperately wanted a pint, but also dinner and coffee and maybe a bottomless brunch with a school friend. A few deadlines were coming up, which they were pleased to be nearing, but they were also in the middle of many other things, so they never really felt much accomplishment by the end of the day, despite doing work.
 
Montreal knew they needed to practice more self-care too. They knew that running and gym and friends and pints and dinners were part of that, but they couldn’t separate it in their mind as something to do rather than something to enjoy. Montreal missed being outside more, something they did a lot when they were unemployed (a definite perk), and they knew they needed to make more time for it, but that seemed like a lot of work. So they’d instead scroll for hours, looking at a bunch of people, places and things they didn’t know, have, want or like.
 
It was all a bit much. They put on comfy clothes and washed with nice-smelling soap, which helped to an extent. They thought about words they liked (they were quite the wordsmith). Squeeze was a good one. Autumn, sibilance and susurrous too. But no matter what was said, what would be discussed, who there was to please, or where there was to go, everything was overwhelming, and nothing was read, set, go. They thought about squeezing into a very tight space and waiting for everything to blow over. It was very much an option.

💥 MISSOURI 💥
‘It's quiet… too quiet,’ Missouri whispered, too old for this shit. ‘In English, please,’ the trusty sidekick, responded, ‘let’s get out of here.’ The pair exited, pursued by a bear. ‘We’ve got company!’ cried Missouri, running down the now exploding hallway, ‘yeah, you better run,’ the trusty sidekick called back. As the dust settled, a mysterious symbol appeared, surrounding the two. A sky beam erupted in the background. ‘That’s new!’ Missouri quipped. ‘I’ve seen these before, they were printed on three billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri, don’t you remember?’ the trusty sidekick, now turned chemistry-lacking love interest, questioned.
 
‘You just don’t get it, do you,’ they replied, walking towards the sunset, putting on their aviators and/or wayfarers. Grabbing Missouri on the shoulders, now in an airport departure lounge, the love interest whispered in their ear, ‘shut up and kiss me.’ The camera crash zoomed on Missouri’s easter egg. ‘I know,’ Missouri replied, as they faded to black. The credits rolled and Thanos appeared, grabbing Mr MacGuffin. He turned to the audience, ‘it’s all sequels and remakes these days.’ The dialogue was quite ropey, and the special effects house was very rushed in delivering on time, but – thankfully – it was a fun film with an under two-hour runtime. More butts in seats!

🎶 RHAPSODY 🎶
Rhapsody looked at the lyrical strings in her hands and felt anxious, reflecting on her promising surroundings. She cared for quiet in the space between lines, ambient. Lost in their wandering body, Melody was calming D Major, glancing at their own reflection, making a cup of tea for the pauses between notes. For a moment Rhapsody stepped towards Melody, and they came closer too. They both wanted more time. Turning back once more, Rhapsody called. ‘Melody, please explore your options,’ she keyed.
 
The clouds moved fast from the bed frame,
they told me to close
my eyes my eyes
trained on seeing something 
(anything)
that was or wasn’t there.
Beehives.
I’ve lost my key, can you help?
 
They looked at each other with lost and confused feelings, dancing on their own at the album listening party. Melody's lost arm trembled and her body wobbled. Rhapsody went back to where she had begun her song. ‘All we ever needed was a simpler tune,’ Rhapsody called, to a crowd no longer listening. They danced, nonetheless.

🇭🇷 Croatia ‘96 🇭🇷
Croatia’s 1996 home kit is one of the most distinctive in football history. I mean, come on. The iconic red and white chequered design, inspired by the country's coat of arms, made an unforgettable debut at the ‘96 Euros, and set a standard from then on. Taking a step back, this kit not only symbolised Croatia’s rich cultural heritage but also marked their first major tournament as an independent nation, making it a piece of football history. 👏👏👏👏 Also, the blocky type… she’s stunning. 💅

🇷🇴 Romania ‘96 🇷🇴 
Romania’s 1996 home kit is a vibrant testament to the nation’s colourful footballing style. And, equally, a testament to how cool small v-neck collars were, are and will always be. 🙌 The bright yellow jersey, accented with red and blue trim, reflects the Romanian flag’s colours, keeping a bold, simple aesthetic, capturing the essence of the team’s flair and creativity on the pitch. This kit, worn during a period of remarkable international success, remains a favourite among football aficionados. 

🇮🇹 Italy ‘68 🇮🇹
Just 🤌🤌 Italy’s 1968 kit is a timeless piece of football fashion, epitomising the elegance and simplicity of Italian design, meanwhile, embodying the decade’s contribution to sporting livery. 🏆 The azure blue shirt, a symbol of the national team, features minimal embellishments, allowing the rich colour to take centre stage. NO, it’s not a European kit, but what you are going to do. It is what it is. Sue me! Get over yourself. If anything is worthy of breaking some rules, it’s Japan’s ‘98 goalie shirt. 🌸 I mean, there are no words. I literally have no words. Look at it!!! Straight up fire. THEY DON’T MAKE THEM LIKE THEY USED TO! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
